Intro
The Australian Koala Foundation runs one of the country’s most important conservation websites, supporting scientists across Australia researching koalas in partnership with the Australian government. In 2020, the site needed a full platform migration, and Sun State Digital was brought in to lead it.

Objective
Migrate the Foundation’s website from Drupal to WordPress without disrupting online product sales or the scientific data researchers relied on, ahead of a Drupal update that would break compatibility with essential software like e-way and FileMaker.

Challenge
This was never going to be a simple platform swap. The site carried more than 40,000 backlinks, live online sales, and critical research data infrastructure, all of which had to come through the move intact. With a three-month timeline and the team based in Brisbane, part of the build was outsourced to developers in Sydney, adding a coordination layer on top of an already technical migration.

Result
We delivered a clean migration from Drupal to WordPress with zero disruption to online sales or scientific data access, resolved the software compatibility issues driving the move, and used the opportunity to refresh the Foundation’s brand for a more modern audience. The result positioned the Australian Koala Foundation to keep supporting koala research and conservation without missing a beat.
